Umweltbetrieb Bielefeld, an independent organisation of the city of Bielefeld, is a pioneer in the integration of environmentally friendly solutions

As an independent institution of the city of Bielefeld, the Umweltbetrieb Bielefeld (UWB) currently employs around 1,200 staff members and handles municipal tasks in the areas of infrastructure and environmental protection. These include areas such as urban drainage, street cleaning, winter services, waste disposal, and the maintenance of the city's green spaces.
Over five years ago, under the direction of Ulrich Pohlmann, Fleet Manager in the Central Operational Tasks department, UWB began using the biodegradable high-performance hydraulic oil AVIA SYNTOFLUID PE-B. Ulrich Pohlmann describes his reasons and experiences as follows:
-
Which equipment/machines are filled with the biodegradable hydraulic fluid AVIA SYNTOFLUID PE-B?
We now use AVIA SYNTOFLUID PE-B in all hydraulic equipment. This oil has been an integral part of our procurement documents for machine acquisition for more than five years. Most manufacturers of waste collection vehicles, sweepers, compact vehicles, excavators, and even well-known manufacturers of compactor containers have followed this path with us. Our machines and systems are filled with AVIA SYNTOFLUID PE-B directly from the factory.
-
What specific sustainability benefits do you see in its use?
With AVIA SYNTOFLUID PE-B, we protect the environment in case of a leakage, and we have observed a significant reduction in unwanted leaks compared to the previously used bio-hydraulic oil. Additionally, we have managed to greatly reduce the number of different oil types; with this oil, we cover almost all hydraulic oil requirements of our wide-ranging fleet. The oil shows good compatibility, allowing us to avoid downtime and costs associated with oil changes. -
What experiences have you had regarding oil lifespan?
By using an additional filter in the return line of the hydraulic circuit, we have been able to reduce the inevitable water and dirt ingress during operation to the extent that no significant oil aging occurs. We now no longer perform hydraulic oil changes for the entire fleet of waste collection vehicles, about 60 units. We ensure this through regular oil monitoring by an independent laboratory. In concrete terms, this means a significant reduction in our fresh oil needs, resulting in less waste. Compared to 2018, our hydraulic oil consumption has been reduced by about 50%, which has also had a positive impact on our procurement costs and CO2 balance. In conclusion, we can attribute the hydraulic oil AVIA SYNTOFLUID PE-B to a perfect combination of performance, economy, and ecology.
